Spread the Word:  Comprehension Shouldn't be Silent!

Wouldn't you love to create reflective learners/readers actually engaged in their learning and reading? If so, and you are a K-12 teacher of any subject area, this is the course for you!  Regardless of  students' abilities, their level of comprehension is what will be an enduring skill.  Transform kids who read mindlessly into lifelong learners who read thoughtfully, independently and for meaning.  This essential workshop will give you authentic and relevant strategies to implement into your practice.

This is a hybrid course, in which participants divide up their time between the half day morning or afternoon class day and the remaining assignment component to be completed outside class. The hybrid format will allow students to access a wider range of educational materials and gain more relevant knowledge to guide them in their profession.

Effective for renewal of professional licenses which expire on June 30, 2004, and after, teachers must have additional reading preparation in scientifically based reading instruction, which the law identifies as “instruction and practice in phonemic awareness, phonics and other word-recognition skills, and guided oral reading for beginning readers, as well as extensive silent reading, vocabulary instruction, instruction in comprehension, and instruction that fosters understanding and higher-order thinking for readers of all ages and proficiency levels.” (Minnesota Statute 122A.06, Subd. 4) This university course will meet the new licensure requirement.

The following Minnesota Teaching Standards apply to this course:

Standard 1. Subject Matter; understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines taught and creates meaningful learning experiences.

Standard 6. Communication; uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster supportive interaction in the classroom.
