Retooling Schooling: Teaching in the 21st Century

The world has changed so fundamentally in the last few decades that the roles of learning and education have to be responsive! The Industrial Age has given way to  the Knowledge Age, which is rapidly entering a new Innovation Age.  What will happen if we continue to use the industrial model of education and be slow to change? What skills are needed to survive and thrive in a complex and connected world? As the global landscape is evolving, discover what transformations can we make in our classrooms, schools and district.

This is a hybrid course, in which participants divide up their time between the half day morning or afternoon class day and the remaining assignment component to be completed outside class. The hybrid format will allow students to access a wider range of educational materials and gain more relevant knowledge to guide them in their profession.

The following Minnesota Teaching Standards apply to this course:

Standard 2. student learning. A teacher must understand how students learn and develop and must provide learning opportunities that support a student's intellectual, social, and personal development.

Standard 5. Learning environment. A teacher must be able to use an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create learning environments that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Standard 10.  Collaboration, ethics,  and relationships.  A teacher must be able to communicate and interact with parents or guardians, families, school colleagues, and the community to support student learning and well-being.
