Retooling Schooling: Teaching in the 21st Century

The world has changed so fundamentally in the last few decades that the roles of learning and education have to be responsive! The Industrial Age has given way to  the Knowledge Age, which is rapidly entering a new Innovation Age.  What will happen if we continue to use the industrial model of education and be slow to change? What skills are needed to survive and thrive in a complex and connected world? As the global landscape is evolving, discover what transformations can we make in our classrooms, schools and district.

This is a hybrid course, in which participants divide up their time between the half day morning or afternoon class day and the remaining assignment component to be completed outside class. The hybrid format will allow students to access a wider range of educational materials and gain more relevant knowledge to guide them in their profession.

The following Wisconsin Teaching Standards apply to this course:

T2. Teachers know how children grow. The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social, and personal development.

T5. Teachers know how to manage a classroom. The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

T10. Teachers are connected with other teachers and the community. The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and well-being and acts with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner.
