Parents as partners in learning – the early years

Throughout a child’s early years, parents or guardians are the primary educators. The purpose of this course is to widen the views of all staff to the possibilities for involving parents and guardians in their child’s education and the potential benefits and pitfalls that exist.

The course will be particularly useful to:

  • all staff in nursery classes, but particularly recently qualified teachers and teaching assistants 
  • Teachers and other staff  who wish to further extend their involvement with a child’s home circumstances 

This course consists of four modules:

    1. How children learn
    2. Parents as partners in learning
    3. Building relationships
    4. Connecting with parents from the start

As you work through the course, you will:

  • look at some of the theories about how children learn
  • reflect on the variety of home backgrounds and lifestyles you may encounter and their advantages and challenges
  • explore the range of activities and interventions that are available to promote partnership with parents and guardians
  • develop strategies for building relationships
  • be guided through the important process of a home visit
