Becoming a More Assertive Staff Member in Interactions with Colleagues

The aim of this course is to provide professional development for all staff and principals who feel they'd like to become more assertive. It aims to offer practical help to people whose lack of assertiveness negatively affects their professional life, by getting them to reflect on different scenarios and practice different techniques.

The course will be useful to all staff who feel they'd benefit from increased assertiveness. It'll require a commitment to personal and professional change, which is one of the course’s greatest challenges. A by-product is the development of an environment in which assertive behavior is encouraged.

As you work through the course, you will:

  • examine your definition of assertiveness, seeing how it differs from passive and aggressive behavior
  • reflect on how a lack of assertiveness may be inhibiting you at work
  • learn techniques for developing your assertiveness
  • learn to recognize when to employ skills of assertiveness
