The aim of the course is to develop knowledge and skills in the recruitment and
selection of staff to provide the best quality teaching for students. It will
encourage both experienced and inexperienced staff to examine the school's
current approaches and practices to meet its particular needs. It will also
highlight the skills necessary to develop a medium- to long-term strategy for
staffing the school, based on research and analysis, and allow a more measured
management of the school's most valuable resource - its teachers.
The course is intended to contribute to the continuing professional
development of:
- leadership team members and middle managers with responsibilities for
recruitment
- aspiring and emergent managers who wish to gain an understanding of the
issues and work towards high
standards in managing resources, e.g., for subject leaders and principals
- any other staff involved in the recruitment process
- School board members involved in staffing and personnel committees may also find
some parts of the course useful to develop their understanding, but the tasks
are essentially designed for school staff
As you work your way through the course you will:
- analyze the staffing profile and needs of the school
- research the national context for teacher recruitment and models
of good practice from other fields
- review school materials and documents, e.g., marketing materials,
job descriptions, staffing structures
- propose new models and practices for recruitment
- develop your own understanding of the principles of successful
recruitment and selection
